Hong Kong: Art Labor: Cloud Chamber

A can of San Miguel Light or a cup of robusta coffee? A seemingly frivolous choice at the opening of “Cloud Chamber,” the collective Art Labor’s first institutional survey outside of Vietnam, but it demonstrated the difficulty of being an art collective focused on socioecological justice and operating within industry paradigms. Environmental NGOs have documented that the San Miguel beverage conglomerate constructed liquefied natural gas infrastructure in a center of marine biodiversity, caused an oil spill affecting 200,000 Filipinos, and violated Indigenous land rights—meanwhile, the coffee was sourced from a collective member’s family farm.
