Teeming with vivacious colors and exuberant paraphernalia, Wawi Navarroza’s midcareer survey “Wild at Heart” at Fotografiska Shanghai appeared entrenched in a tropical daydream. Utilizing her body as an inquisitive and regenerative medium, Navarraza creates self-portraits that merge the theatrical staging of tableaux-vivant with the formal rigidity of Byzantine iconography. Nonetheless, she injects these canons of art history with her personal narratives to explore a woman artist’s selfhood, while navigating the challenge of photographing the intangible, namely her psychological inner world.
