Leaks and Losses
In late September, Victoria’s anti-corruption commission announced that a former senior executive at Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria had allegedly stolen approximately AUD 8 million (USD 5.6 million) from the institution over six years. The official, identified as the gallery’s former head of IT, is accused of using his authority to conceal a scheme involving hundreds of falsified documents and the purchase and resale of smartphones for personal profit. He has been charged with eight offenses, including seven counts of theft and one of misconduct in public office. The case has raised questions about how a multimillion-dollar scheme could have remained undetected for so long.
