“Domestic,” Ella Wijt says, is “something very familiar, familiarly scary, familiarly beautiful, familiarly uncomfortable.” That ambivalence lies at the heart of “Domestic Emotions,” her solo debut at Sullivan + Strumpf. Home emerges not as refuge but as something patiently cultivated through the ordinary acts of walking, drawing, sewing, and gardening, until the familiar becomes sacred.

The painting Abundance of Blessings (2026), which greets visitors near the entrance, maps the landscape surrounding the artist’s home in Depok, West Java. Winding paths thread through a patchwork of fields, forests, and gardens punctuated by lattice-like portals, radiant stars, and small contained fires with an air of enchantment. A border of white daisies introduces a motif of resilience that recurs throughout the exhibition. Neither wholly tended nor left wild, the landscape reveals a personal cosmology in which the material and spiritual coexist.
