Upon a Machine
The Kitchen, New York

While their Chelsea home undergoes renovation, The Kitchen is gathering new energy at their temporary space in Westbeth. Reconceived as a complex of affordable artist studios and housing in the 1960s, the building was once the Bell Laboratories that introduced the cutting-edge technologies of “talkie,” TV broadcast, and binary computer to the world. In this storied premises, Indonesian artist trio Tromarama—comprising Febie Babyrose, Herbert Hans, and Ruddy Hatumena—presents their first US solo commission Upon a Machine (2026). The sound and video installation reflects on AI technology and post-Cold War capitalism, which spurred the rapid economic growth in East and Southeast Asia.
