In her dish-rack sculptures, Joy Li melds the domestic with the urban, casting viewers as flâneurs suspended in the uncanniness of metropolitan estrangement. In Our Ephemeral Eternity. Our Love. Our Ordinary Battlefield (2025), kitchen brackets rise as miniature skyscrapers; two phone-sized screens—one showing a sleeping puppy, the other the artist silently stacking mushrooms by herself—recall LED billboards; a potted snake plant masquerades as greenery; and a slice of apple, patched with a metal replica, sutures the organic to the fabricated. Through this assemblage of ordinary objects, Li reconstructs the city at an intimate, disorienting scale. At intervals, she conjures a tower of soap bubbles from dish detergent and wheels it toward the audience on a trolley. The work oscillates between solidity and ephemerality, the monumental and the minute. Moving through it, one feels strangely disembodied, acquiring simultaneously the perspectives of a bewildered giant and an omniscient ghost.
