At over 3,500 meters, the air in Leh, Ladakh’s capital, is rarefied. For anyone arriving from the plains, each breath in this Himalayan region can be a challenge. Yet it is here, in this high-altitude desert, that Raqs Media Collective mounts its first institutional solo in India in over a decade. Given the collective’s preoccupation with different registers of time, it is perhaps serendipitous that the concept of deep time also undergirds the exhibition space. After all, millions of years ago, Ladakh formed the floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean before tectonic forces pushed it heavenward.
Curated by Qamoos Bukhari, “The Time is Never Ripe” is presented at the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO), a UNESCO-recognized contemporary art center. Consisting of two restored 17th-century homes—the Munshi and Gyaoo houses—the art space gathers both old and new iterations of the collective’s work across a medley of media such as sculpture, installation, photography, painting, and video. Spread across two floors and a staircase, the works are, for the most part, exhibiting in South Asia for the first time.
