Photographer Alec Soth, whose 2004 monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi was widely acclaimed for its original portrayal of life beside America’s iconic river, wants us to know that the title of his most recent book, Advice for Young Artists, is something of a deceit. “I don’t have any advice,” Soth wrote in Frieze. “Instead of playing the role of wise elder, this book was an attempt to remind myself of how I felt when I first discovered artmaking.”
