The Gwangju Biennale Foundation has issued a call for applications for the role of artistic director of its 17th edition, marking the first time since the biennale’s founding in 1995 that the position will be filled through an open process rather than direct appointment. The edition is slated for 2028.

Previously, the biennale’s artistic director was selected by the foundation’s board from a shortlist of recommended or nominated candidates. The new system invites proposals from both individual curators and curatorial teams based in Korea or abroad, who must submit a curatorial portfolio and concept.

The foundation has framed the change as an effort to establish a more transparent and inclusive selection process. In a press release, it stated: “We are at a turning point that requires new changes. We aim to establish a more democratic and open selection system for the artistic director while preserving the spirit of Gwangju and the pride of our 30-year history.”

The application period runs from June 8 to August 3, with the appointment expected to be announced in October. The open call comes as preparations continue for the 16th edition, “You must change your life,” directed by Singaporean artist-filmmaker Ho Tzu Nyen and scheduled to open on September 5.
