Róng Museum of Art Reveals Its Curatorial Team
Shenzhen’s Róng Museum of Art (RMoA) has appointed Freya Chou, Li Jia, and Susanna Zhu as members of its curatorial team. They will join Pi Li, RMoA’s founding director, in shaping the museum’s research initiatives, exhibitions, and public programs ahead of its scheduled opening in mid-2027.
Based in Hong Kong, Freya Chou is known for exploring intercultural exchange across various disciplines, from visual art and performance to literature. From 2015 to 2019, she served as the inaugural curator of education and public programs at the Hong Kong’s nonprofit Para Site, and has overseen projects at various institutions across the globe, including the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and Turin’s Museum of Asian Art. She headed Hong Kong’s presentation at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and co-curated the 13th Taipei Biennial (2023), and most recently curated Ellen Pau’s retrospective at the SculptureCenter in New York, “She Moves.”
In her curatorial practice, Li Jia engages with cross-generational contemporary artists from China and across Asia. After helming Pace Gallery’s Beijing branch as deputy director from 2012 to 2015, she joined the Taikang Art Museum (formerly Taikang Space) as senior curator from 2015 to 2020, where she organized numerous presentations, including Yang Guangnan’s “Light Pavilion Project” (2016–18) and “Genders Engender” (2018). At RMoA, she and Chou will be in charge of developing the museum’s exhibitions and research endeavors.
Susanna Zhu brings more than two decades of experience to her new role. She previously worked as deputy director of Shenzhen Fine Art Institute’s exhibition department from 2003 to 2014, as well as secretary general of the Shenzhen Curiosity Museum Studies Centre from 2017 to 2026. Over the past two years, she was the director of the Zishi Garden Community Museum of Sustainability. Zhu will lead RMoA’s public engagement initiatives and learning programs.
In a press release, Pi Li stated, “Freya Chou, Li Jia, and Susanna Zhu each bring substantial expertise and distinct perspectives. . . . Their appointments further strengthen the museum’s professional team and will help us build a curatorial and research framework that is both intellectually rigorous and open in spirit, laying an important foundation for the museum’s opening.”
