Para Site Executive Director Billy Tang Steps Down after Three-Year Tenure

Billy Tang, executive director and curator of Hong Kong’s leading independent nonprofit art space Para Site, has officially announced his departure from the organization after a three-year tenure. His last day in the role was May 30, 2025.
Tang joined Para Site in May 2022, succeeding the high-profile Cosmin Costinas, who shepherded the art space’s increasing international visibility as its executive director and curator from 2011–2022. Prior to his appointment at Para Site, Tang was senior curator at Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai (2019–22) and curatorial director at Magician Space, a commercial gallery in Beijing (2013–18).
During his term at Para Site, Tang led an exhibition program that emphasized local and international emerging and midcareer artists while fostering dialogue within the Hong Kong contemporary art community. Highlights include “Art Labor: Cloud Chamber” (2024); “Aki Sasamoto: Sounding Lines” (2024); as well as “Enzo Camacho & Ami Lien: Offerings for Escalante” (2023).
Tang also oversaw Para Site’s physical expansion in 2023, opening an annex 12 stories below the institution’s 22nd-floor main exhibition area in Hong Kong’s Quarry Bay district. Tang’s final exhibition for Para Site—a solo exhibition of Bangkok-based conceptual artist Pratchaya Phinthong—will open this September.
Tang expressed his gratitude for his time at Para Site in a farewell email to friends and supporters of the establishment, stating: “It has been the greatest honor and privilege to lead this extraordinary organization.” He highlighted the collaborative spirit that has defined his tenure, thanking the community of friends, collaborators, partners, and supporters.
According to the official announcement from Para Site, current deputy director Junni Chen will step into the role of interim director, ensuring continuity during this transition as the Board undertakes a formal search for Tang’s replacement.
