The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) has appointed Mark Feary as curator of the 2028 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, which is slated to run from March 3 to June 4, 2028. 

Born in Aotearoa New Zealand, Feary brings over 20 years of leadership experience to the role. He has held curatorial positions at various art institutions, including the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney, Buxton International and West Space in Melbourne, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 2016, Feary has served as the artistic director of Melbourne’s nonprofit Gertrude Contemporary, overseeing the organization’s exhibitions and programming.

In a press release, AGSA director Jason Smith noted, “We are delighted to welcome Mark Feary as curator of the 2028 Adelaide Biennial, whose extensive experience and thoughtful curatorial approach will undoubtedly shape an ambitious and compelling exhibition.”

Feary remarked in a statement that each iteration of the biennial “defin[es] a particular moment in and view of Australian culture,” adding that his “research trajectory for the 2028 edition will be focused upon capturing a particular mood, acknowledging problematic histories, and an increasingly uncertain and turbulent present, but motivated by the persistence of optimism.”
