Participating Artists of 60th Venice Biennale Announced

The 60th Venice Biennale announced the list of 332 participating artists at a press conference on January 30th. Curator Adriano Pedrosa revealed that for his exhibition, titled “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere” he has selected many artists who have never participated in the mega-festival. Highlights this year include outdoor projects between the exhibition spaces where a performance project with events is being planned during the pre-opening week and closing weekend. The Venice Biennale will open to the public from Saturday April 20 to Sunday November 24, 2024.

This year’s title is drawn from works by the Paris-born and Palermo-based collective Claire Fontaine, which consist of neon sculptures displaying the words “Foreigners Everywhere” in a growing number of languages. The phrase itself derives from the name of a Turin collective who fought racism and xenophobia in Italy in the early 2000s.

Exploring the idea of “being a foreigner everywhere” from a variety of angles, the artworks are divided into two categories: Nucleo Contemporaneo and Nucleo Storico. Nucleo Contemporaneo centers on the works of queer, outsider, folk, and indigenous artists. A special section is devoted to Marco Scotini’s long-running research project the Disobedience Archive, which documents the relationships between artistic practices and activism. Nucleo Storico, on the other hand, sheds light on modernisms in the Global South from Latin America, to Africa, and Asia. Artists from Singapore and Korea have been brought into this section as well as artists from Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Along with the central exhibition, 90 national participations will be included in the exhibition, with four of them—Republic of Benin, Ethiopia, United Republic of Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Timor Leste—participating for the first time. Three additional nations—Nicaragua, Republic of Panama, Senegal—are participating for the first time with their own pavilion.
