Huda Takriti Wins Han Nefkens Foundation’s 2025 Video Art Grant

The nonprofit Han Nefkens Foundation has announced Syrian multidisciplinary artist Huda Takriti as the recipient of its 2025 Museu Tàpies Video Art Production Grant, which is presented in collaboration with the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore; WIELS in Brussels; the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Manila; the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai; and the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina in Naples.
The grant supports emerging visual artists living in Central and West Asia and aims to promote contemporary productions of video art. As part of the initiative, Takriti will receive USD 15,000 to create a new screen-based video work, which will be exhibited next year at each partner institution.
Born in 1990 in Damascus, Takriti is currently based in Vienna, where she is pursuing a PhD in practice at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Spanning video and installation, her oeuvre critically engages with colonial and state archives to uncover suppressed narratives. With a focus on anti-imperialist struggles, Takriti approaches these histories—particularly those of female freedom fighters in the Middle East—through a decolonial and feminist lens.
This year’s jury, comprising the leaders of each collaborating institution, was chaired by Dutch writer and collector Han Nefkens. In a press release, the jury praised Takriti’s proposal for its “openness” and “unique research perspective,” as it offers “a range of possible outcomes rather than a fixed direction.” They further commented on her use of “multiple visual and conceptual languages” that “[blend] documentary, metaphor, and narrative critique.”
Takriti expressed her gratitude in a statement, saying: “This grant comes at a time when I am questioning the limits of the impact [that] art can have for those suffering in the real world. I take it as a reminder to remain steadfast in the hope that together we can work toward shifting narratives and bringing justice to all.”
