On Tainan’s Hai’an Road, twin LED panels conjure a vibrant virtual realm as they re-render the street and its surrounding infrastructures. Titled VERSE U – Between Wells and Windows (2024) and created by the Taiwanese new-media artist collective 2ENTER, the outdoor piece invites passersby to scan a QR code and design their own avatars, which are then incorporated into the simulated cityscape. Meanwhile, DATA-VERSE U # Calendar (2022), located inside Taipei’s House of Story Wear mall, comprises a microcomputer that appears to display a traditional Chinese tear-off calendar but generates real-time images of dates, weather, and seasonal fruits. As our material context is increasingly mediated through digital interfaces, 2ENTER’s playfully interactive works contemplate whether our online traces are transmuting into something more than mere data.
