Tarek Atoui to Create 2026 Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall

Tarek Atoui will present the 11th Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Launched in 2014 and supported by Hyundai Motor Company, the initiative invites an artist each year to create a site-specific work. The Beirut-born artist and composer’s practice often centers on custom-made instruments crafted from organic materials and conceived as sculptural objects which he uses to transform spaces into immersive multisensory installations. Catherine Wood, interim director of Tate Modern, said in a press release: “Tarek Atoui has captivated audiences internationally with his boundary-pushing approach to sound. Blending music, technology, sculpture, and performance, he is a truly cross-disciplinary artist whose work references current social, historical, and political realities.” Atoui’s commission will be on view from October 13 through April 11, 2027.

Located in Geumcheon-gu in southern Seoul, the museum will be the city’s first public institution dedicated to media art and technology-based practices. Heecheon Kim, whose work probes the intersection of the physical and the virtual, will inaugurate the venue with a solo exhibition. The opening follows last year’s launch of the Photography Seoul Museum of Art. While each venue will maintain a distinct identity, “the museum will operate as an interconnected and organic network,” stated SeMA general director Choi Eun-ju. SeMA has also announced plans for major renovations of its flagship site in Seosomun, scheduled for completion in 2030.
